A key theme of this year’s CableLabs Winter Conference revolved around the customer (AKA subscriber)—how cable operators need to better understand changing demographics through the use of big data analytics—and how to adapt to their needs by providing new models for content.
Fifty vendors participated in a demo floor which CableLabs members toured during the two-day show. Our tabletop showcased a live demonstration of the next-generation Fairshare Traffic Management product and its unique QualityGuard feature. As the name implies, QualityGuard ensures a high Quality of Experience (QoE) for high-value subscriber traffic (typically interactive communications like Skype or real-time entertainment applications like Netflix).
The demo showed how high-value subscriber traffic is protected in real-time when network congestion appears. Our conversations with delegates echoed the importance of this point; of policy only being applied when needed to positively affect subscriber QoE. To show QualityGuard in action, our demo used a high definition video stream and the real-time network insight provided by our Control Center management interface.
Although this demo was tailored to the cable environment, QualityGuard can operate within networks of any access technology. Our customers see the value in using QualityGuard to mitigate congestion in their networks, due to its policy definition flexibility, operating cost saving benefits, and subscriber QoE improvements.
As the keynotes at CableLabs highlighted, cable operators are intently aware of the need to segment their customer base and offer innovative, personalized services that are geared towards the associated behaviors. Bookmark this article!
